On Healing

I am a healer, first and foremost, and have been fascinated by the body-mind connection since I was a kid. What I’ve learned in my 30ish years of working in the holistic healing space is this: behind every physical ailment is a relationship challenge; and behind every relationship challenge is a disconnection in the relationship with oneself. Healing relationships can have an extraordinary healing effect on the body.

My roots:

My mother was a multi-disciplinary healer in South Africa. She was a physical therapist and classical homeopath who diagnosed people with their hair, made Bach remedies from the indigenous plants, swung her pendulum to guide her treatments, taught brain gym and circle dancing, did Feldenkrais and Touch For Health, led weekly healing circles, intuited healing wisdom and had a profound effect on many people’s lives.

My father, by contrast, was a nuclear physicist. He lived by the mantra: “Prove it, Prove it. Prove it.” Needless to say, they didn’t communicate much. Being a bridge between their worlds, ie bringing science and spirituality together in a way that makes sense of the human experience, especially as it pertains to healing, is part of my life’s mission.

At 14 I read the autobiography of Carl Jung. From it I understood that we cannot affect true healing until we reach the Soul. I was intrigued! What was the soul? How do we reach it? What happens when we do? And, how to I explain all that to dad? These became the questions that shaped the next two decades of my life.

In my quest I earned a degree in Psychology, certifications in various somatic therapies and Behavioral Kinesiology (under the tutelage of Sue Meyers, a trainee of Dr John Diamond – who wrote “Your Body Doesn’t Lie”) and, in 2003, began my journey to becoming a certified Demartini Method facilitator.

I discovered in my 20+ years of owning a holistic healing practice that I could, when I put my hands on people, “see” into their bodies and “feel” their emotional charges. I could “hear” their stories. What I learned was this: behind every physical ailment was a relationship challenge; and behind every relationship challenge was a disconnection in the relationship the person was having with themselves.

I saw that when people healed their relationships (with others and themselves) …their bodies shifted.

(You can read more about the psycho-spiritual roots of illness here. This was first published in 2012 in The Power of You, written by myself and 11 other healers and personal development coaches)

In 2003 and 2006 I experienced two extraordinarily powerful self-healing events. In the first I ‘collapsed’ debilitating endometriosis that had plagued me my entire adult life; and in the second I ‘disappeared’ a tumor in my breast. From these experiences I extrapolated the 5-part process that I had taken myself through. I now call it the “Awakening GRACE Process”.

Over the years my practice has shifted away from somatic therapies and focused more and more on relationships: what makes them work well; how to heal the divides between and within us; how to use conflict as a connector; and how to master catalytic communication skills.

Relationship is the organizing principle of the Universe ……and every relationship is a conversation.

Mastering the art of conversing in a way that catalyzes change in yourself and others – bringing out the best in everyone – is critical to professional success and personal happiness.

I love working with clients who really want this ❤️
